How Padraig Harrington Creates Elite Speed at 54

Padraig Harrington just proved it again.

Back-to-back U.S. Senior Open Champion.

At 54 years old, he's still able to produce 120+ mph club speed and over 180 mph ball speed, making him one of the longest players in professional golf.

So what's his secret?

As one of our SuperSpeed Tour Ambassadors, we spent an entire day with Padraig collecting biomechanics, force plate, grip strength, and swing data to answer that exact question.

Here's what we found.

Elite Lag Starts With Elite Sequencing

Padraig creates one of the highest amounts of downswing loading (lag) we've measured on Tour.

It starts with a wide takeaway that creates space, followed by an early pressure shift toward the lead side as he transitions. This allows the club to continue loading while his body is already moving toward the target.

The result?

More stored energy and more speed released exactly where it matters, at impact.

He Uses the Ground Exceptionally Well

Force plate testing revealed one of Padraig's biggest superpowers.

Throughout the backswing, he's already creating lateral force toward the target. That early pressure shift sets up tremendous rotational torque and powerful lead-side vertical force before impact.

These ground reaction forces help him create massive clubhead speed while keeping the swing incredibly stable and repeatable.

Grip Strength Matters More Than Most Golfers Think

Padraig also possesses elite grip strength of around 62 kg, placing him among the strongest tour players we've tested.

More importantly, he knows how to use it.

As he transitions into the downswing, grip pressure ramps up dramatically, allowing him to control the tremendous lag he's creating before releasing the club efficiently through impact.

That same grip strength is also a major advantage from thick rough and other demanding lies.

Even After 10 Years of SuperSpeed, He's Still Getting Faster

Padraig has been using SuperSpeed training for nearly a decade.

That didn't stop us from finding opportunities to improve.

Based on his testing, we built a customized program focused on:

  • Optimizing ground reaction force timing
  • Maximizing rotational torque
  • Refining overspeed training
  • Applying speed directly to ball speed
  • Continuing to build grip strength

Because speed isn't something you achieve once.

It's something you continue to develop.

Train Like Padraig

The same tools used to build Padraig's customized speed program are available to every golfer:

Combined with our newest app training protocols, they create a complete system for developing more clubhead speed, more ball speed, and more distance.

Congratulations to Padraig Harrington on another incredible U.S. Senior Open victory. It's exciting to see years of smart training, great mechanics, and relentless improvement continue to pay off at the highest level.
